4 Surprising Reasons Why You Haven’t Found Your Passion
Being able to make a living doing something that you’re passionate about isn’t a myth. Here’s the truth.
“I don’t know my passion” is a common, but destructive remark.
You keep working in a job you hate, with boring people, staying trapped in that vicious circle.
You wake up in a boring state and end up sleeping spiritless. At best, you’ll get a few joyful hours during the weekend.
The truth is, passion doesn’t have to be applied only for a few hours a day. There is another way of living, less soul-destroying.
“Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.” – Steve Jobs
Lack of research is your main reason for not having a passion. Even worse, you may not be doing that research because you think you don’t even deserve to have a passion, or at least not one that you get to pursue on the job. After all, work is supposed to be boring right?
Thus, you never try to find your true purpose.
You are probably seeing yourself in those words. Perhaps, it is the reason you are reading this article. Maybe you think society, work, and relationships are bulls**t, but you don’t know where to start, thinking that if you could discover your true passion, you would give yourself the opportunity to test your suspicions.
If you have so far only verified your belief that work has to be boring, you will have a hard time believing what I am about to tell you.
Not only is it possible to love your work, it is even easier to live from it. However, you first need to find the source of that love. The four keys to finding that source are simple and easy to apply. Follow and implement them correctly, and feel the passion taking over your body.
You probably have the false self-belief of not being the “passionate type”, but as you go through these exercises, you will realize that you are way more passionate than you thought.
Here are the 4 keys to discover your passion and start living an exciting life.
1. You Are Not Giving Yourself the Permission To Be Passionate
Are you allowing yourself to be passionate? This is a crucial and overlooked step.
I was working at jobs I absolutely hated for years. I thought I didn’t deserve to make a living doing something I love.
From society’s point of view and from people around me, I “knew” work was supposed to be boring.
Think of it like how you feel about reading books — we all have subjects we love reading about, but since we are forced to read books that don’t really resonate with us during our high school years, we tend to associate reading books with being bored.
Everyone has the right to be passionate and to wake up in the morning excited by the day ahead.
Here is a quick way of knowing if you are allowing yourself to live from doing something you love.
Have you ever turned on the television and seen professional athletes earning millions by having fun and thought they don’t deserve all that money? Or have you been following the Justin Bieber hate fest just because he is a kid earning millions by singing and doing something he loves?
If you have, it is time to change your beliefs, because this is exactly what you are deeply thinking about yourself.
It is easy to be a judge sitting in your living room watching your television, but the reality is that these people aren’t there only by ‘’chance.’’.
The truth is; these people had the courage to follow their passions.
Allow yourself to be passionate and to live through your real values.
2. You Are Not Applying the Filter Correctly
Most people think they need to find their one and only passion, all-or-nothing.
Having that attitude will only make you pass through all the other opportunities that could have you living passionately.
There are a multiple possibilities.
From one side of the spectrum, there is the work you totally hate.
On the other side, there is the work you love doing. Between these two extremities, there are a lot of stimulating jobs.
As you make a habit of orienting yourself in jobs that make you feel alive, you will become better at putting a filter on boring jobs.
3. You Are Not Monitoring Your Current Situation
Often, the opportunities to start living from your passion are right in front of you. Either you didn’t notice them or you think they are too fascinating to be sustainable income sources.
The truth is that most people never give themselves enough time to find their passion. They prioritize other things instead, such as watching TV and comparing smartphones on the Internet.
Finding the things that make them feel alive isn’t a priority for them.
If you are determined to find your passion, you need to spend quality time thinking about the subject. If you aren’t ready for that, then you should stop reading the article.
If you’re still with me, take a piece of paper, or open a word document, and complete this questionnaire with honesty.
If you are lazy like me, you are probably thinking about answering them mentally. I really suggest writing down your answers.
You have nothing to lose. In fact, you have everything to win!
These questions will help you finding your passion:
- Which subject excites you just by the thought of it?
- Which subject intrigues you to the point where you can’t stop researching about?
- Which subject can you spend hours talking about without even realizing it?
- When you get into a library, around which section do you usually find yourself?
- When do you feel the most creative?
- Describe one or two examples of superb works that you have accomplished in the past.
Answering these questions without thinking too deeply is the main point. Let a relationship materialize between your fingers and your heart.
Don’t interfere with your brain. Write down anything that shows up for you.
What about now? What do you see? What is coming through your answers?
4. Achievement or Happiness?
Most people are losing their time trying to find a career that will make them happy.
The problem?
That concept is too ambiguous. Eating an ice cream will provide you with temporary happiness and satisfaction.
It is possible to be happy without feeling satisfied.
Instead of asking yourself: “What makes me happy?” Ask yourself “What can provide me with satisfaction?”
Some things don’t trigger happiness in you just by the thought of them. However, once accomplished, provide you with satisfaction.
Losing weight could be a great example; you may not be excited by the idea of cutting your tasty sweet smelling chocolate cakes from your breakfast, but once you start seeing your sexy abs popping out you feel satisfied.
On the other hand, you could be really happy about doing something, but once completed, you feel bad about it; eating that cake during your diet could be a great example.
If you want to wake up excited every day, you need to favor satisfaction rather than comfort. Think about what provides you with satisfaction before adventuring yourself in a new territory.
Is it about doing something you find cool and interesting? Or is it about doing something where you are able to make a difference?
This is where passion and charisma get connected; by creating a difference in other people’s life.
Finally, Take Action
Find your passion, and then find a way to make it useful.
Those who aren’t afraid to follow their passions are the ones ending up being successful.
The only fear you should have is fear itself.
Why?
There are endless reasons. Let’s get through some of them;
- Learning more about your passion will become a natural need
- You will always feel the need to improve
- You can work as hard as you want, you won’t feel it
- Nobody will have the drive to make sacrifices like you do
- You will finally feel free You will be doing something you love every day
The most important part is finding a way to make your passion useful, and people will feel your excitement, they will pay for your service.
You will be delivering value.
Forget about what society taught you to be. Become the person that YOU always wanted to be. It is your turn to start feeling alive.
Perseverance and determination will be your new partners as you will start living under your own terms.
What is stopping you from living your passion?
